Horn Antenna Synthesis

The horn antenna synthesis tool performs a simultaneous optimization of the tracking and telecommunication performances of a horn antenna. The design process is simplified by an initial synthesis of the horn geometry based on closed-form expressions that are available from technical literature. Such expressions typically require specification of some basic performance parameters such as frequency range, minimum gain (peak and illumination taper), XPD and aperture efficiency.

The synthesis tool based on µWave Wizard's™ Body Of Revolution (BOR) elements supports following profiles:

  • Smooth Wall Horns:
    • Conical horns
    • Dual mode horns
    • Modified potter horns
    • Profile smooth wall horn
  • Corrugated horns:
    • Corrugated horns with corrugations perpendicular to the horn axis
    • Ring loaded corrugated horns
    • Corrugated horns with axial corrugations
    • Coaxial waveguide corrugated horn

Performance parameters

The µWave Wizard™ is capable to calculate the following horn electrical performance parameters:

  • Input return loss for the fundamental mode excitation and for the higher order modes (TMmn and TEmn ) mode excitation
  • Copolar and crosspolar radiation patterns for the fundamental mode and for the higher order modes at any given distance from the radiator aperture
  • Spherical wave expansion (SWE) parameters are optionally written to data file either in µWave Wizard™ specific or in other common format
  • Phase center location, aperture efficiency, 3 and 10 dB beamwidth are derived from the copolar radiation patterns
  • Electromagnetic fields and aperture field distribution along the horn antenna
  • Maximal field strengths versus frequency
  • Ohmic losses

The Performance parameters can be used as part of equations and for optimization.
